ERIGGA, DAVIDO CLASH OVER ‘FAMILY MONEY’ POST

Nigerian rapper Erhiga Agarivbie, popularly known as Erigga, has sparked a social media debate after praising musicians who did not come from wealthy families but worked hard to earn their money.

Erigga, in a post on X on Tuesday, wrote, “Shoutout to all the musicians who don’t come from family money and had to grind for every single dollar they earn.”

Afrobeats star David Adeleke, aka Davido, reacted to the post, arguing that musicians from wealthy backgrounds who also worked hard to succeed deserved recognition.

Davido wrote, “Shoutout to the ones that came from family money and still grind to the top,” before describing Erigga’s post as “useless motivation” and referring to the rapper as an “imbecile.”

The exchange has generated thousands of reactions on X, with users divided over whether Erigga’s post was simply motivational or an indirect reference to Davido, who comes from a wealthy family.

Some users defended Erigga, arguing that he was only celebrating artistes who built their careers without financial privilege, while others criticised him for allegedly diminishing the efforts of wealthy musicians.

Several users also defended Davido, saying that coming from a privileged background does not mean an artiste cannot work hard or earn their success.

The controversy has continued to generate debate about privilege, inheritance and the role of personal effort in achieving success in the Nigerian music industry.
