Prof. Dawood Egbefo, the immediate past Acting Vice-Chancellor of Edo State University, Iyahmo, has passed away just two weeks after handing over to his successor.

The sad news was confirmed by the university’s spokesperson, Amaechi Kelly Quincy, in a statement shared on the institution’s official Facebook page.

Recall that Governor Monday Okpebholo had earlier approved the appointment of Prof. Victor Adetimirin Olawale as the substantive Vice-Chancellor on August 8, 2025, officially succeeding Prof. Egbefo.

While the cause of his death was not disclosed, the university described him as a distinguished scholar, mentor, and astute administrator, noting that his contributions to academia and the growth of the institution will be remembered.

Prof. Egbefo earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees in History and International Studies from the University of Ilorin. He began his academic journey at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, before joining Edo State University in 2017 as an Associate Professor.

His sudden passing has left the academic community and colleagues in deep shock, as tributes continue to pour in for a man many regarded as a committed educator and leader.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
