Italian motorsport icon and Paralympic champion Alex Zanardi has died at the age of 59, his family announced on Saturday.

Zanardi, one of Italy’s most celebrated sports figures, passed away “suddenly” on Friday evening, according to a statement issued through his charity, Obiettivo3. The family said he died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, without disclosing the cause of death.

He rose to prominence as a Formula One driver in the 1990s, competing for teams including Jordan, Minardi, and Lotus, before achieving major success in the CART championship in the United States, where he won back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998.

After returning briefly to Formula One with Williams in 1999, his career took a tragic turn in 2001 when a horrific crash at the Lausitzring circuit in Germany resulted in the amputation of both legs.

Despite the life-changing injury, Zanardi rebuilt his career in para-sport, becoming a global symbol of resilience. He went on to dominate handbike racing, winning four Paralympic gold medals at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games.

His influence extended beyond sport, as he became an advocate for disability awareness and inclusion, inspiring millions through his foundation and public speaking.

Zanardi had largely remained out of the public eye following a second severe accident in 2020 during a handbike race in Tuscany, which left him with serious head injuries.

Tributes have poured in from across the sporting world, with the International Paralympic Committee describing him as a “pioneer, icon and legend” whose legacy reshaped perceptions of disability and human potential.

Italian leaders and sporting bodies also honoured him, praising his courage, determination, and lasting impact on both motorsport and Paralympic sport.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
