EXPERT URGES TECH UPGRADE, SECURITY AWARENESS TO TACKLE TRANSPORT INSECURITY
A security expert has called for improved technology and increased public awareness to address insecurity in Nigeria’s transport sector, stressing the need for stronger measures to protect passengers, transport operators and infrastructure.
The expert noted that insecurity across road and other transport networks poses serious challenges to mobility, commercial activities and public confidence. Incidents such as kidnapping, robbery, vehicle theft and attacks on transport routes can disrupt movement and impose additional costs on individuals and businesses.
The expert advocated the deployment of modern security technologies to improve surveillance, detect threats and support faster responses to emergencies. Such measures could include CCTV systems, GPS tracking, digital reporting platforms and improved communication networks linking transport operators with security agencies.
Technology, the expert maintained, can help authorities monitor vulnerable locations, track vehicles and gather information that supports investigations. However, the effectiveness of these tools would depend on proper deployment, regular maintenance and coordination among relevant agencies.
The expert also emphasised the importance of security awareness among commuters, drivers, transport companies and other stakeholders. Public education could help people recognise suspicious activities, report potential threats promptly and adopt safer travel practices.
Transport operators were encouraged to strengthen internal security procedures, verify relevant personnel and establish clear channels for reporting incidents. Collaboration with security agencies could also improve information sharing and help identify emerging threats before they escalate.
The expert further called for better coordination between government authorities, transport unions, private operators and communities to develop practical responses to security challenges. Addressing the problem, the expert suggested, requires more than deploying equipment; it also demands effective enforcement, adequate training and sustained investment.
Improving security across transport networks would help protect lives and property while supporting trade, tourism and economic activities. A combination of modern technology, public awareness and stronger institutional cooperation could therefore play an important role in making transportation safer and more reliable in Nigeria.
