FALANA TO EDO GOVERNOR: RETRACT THREAT AGAINST PETER OBI OR FACE LEGAL ACTION
Prominent human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has demanded that Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, immediately withdraw threats allegedly made against Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate.
Falana’s remarks come in response to statements reportedly made by Governor Okpebholo during a political rally in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area. At the event, the governor is said to have warned that Obi must not visit Edo State without prior notice or official security clearance.
The governor reportedly stated, “There’s a new sheriff in town. He cannot just come into Edo without informing me. His security will not be guaranteed. If anything happens to him here, he will have himself to blame. I’m not joking.”
In a statement issued on Sunday, Falana strongly criticized the governor’s comments, labeling them a breach of fundamental human rights as protected by both the Nigerian Constitution and international conventions.
He cited Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, both of which uphold the right to life, and declared the threats unlawful.
Falana further referenced Section 14(2)(b) of the Constitution, which prioritizes the security and welfare of citizens, urging Governor Okpebholo to not only retract his remarks but also publicly apologize to Obi and guarantee his safety in the state.
The senior lawyer added that should the governor fail to comply, Peter Obi should approach the Federal High Court in Benin to seek legal protection of his fundamental rights.
“In light of the rise in mob violence and extrajudicial killings in the country, Mr Obi must take immediate legal action,” Falana advised.
