FAMILIES DESPERATE FOR NEWS AS RESCUERS WORK TO IDENTIFY SPANISH TRAIN CRASH VICTIMS
Rescue teams in Spain are continuing to search through mangled train carriages as families desperately seek information about relatives missing after a deadly collision involving two high-speed trains in the central province of Toledo.
The crash occurred on Wednesday near the town of Urda, when a train operated by state-owned Renfe struck the rear of a stationary train operated by private company Iryo. The collision sent several carriages off the tracks, leaving dozens dead and scores injured.
As emergency workers comb the wreckage using cranes, search dogs, drones and other equipment, relatives have turned to social media to circulate photographs, descriptions of clothing and details of the carriages and seats where their loved ones were travelling.
Some families have travelled from Madrid and other cities to reception centres and hospitals, hoping to find missing relatives among the survivors. Others have expressed frustration over the difficulty of obtaining reliable information while identification work continues.
Spain’s Civil Guard has established offices in Madrid, Toledo, Córdoba and Seville to collect DNA samples from close relatives and help identify victims. Railway operators and emergency services have also opened telephone lines to provide information and assistance to affected families.
The disaster has prompted the Spanish government to declare three days of national mourning. Flags are flying at half-mast, while public events have been cancelled or scaled back in tribute to those who died.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has pledged support for victims and their families and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Officials are examining possible signalling and operational failures, although the precise causes remain under investigation.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about railway safety in Spain, which suffered another deadly high-speed train collision earlier in the year. As rescue operations continue, families remain anxiously awaiting confirmation of the fate of their loved ones.
