FAYEMI TO LEAD UNGA DISCUSSION ON AFRICA’S PRIORITIES FOR NEW UN CHIEF

Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, is set to host a high-level dialogue on Africa’s expectations from the incoming Secretary-General of the United Nations. The discussion is expected to provide an opportunity for African leaders, policymakers and other stakeholders to outline the continent’s priorities as the UN prepares for a new leadership phase.

The dialogue is scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. It is expected to focus on Africa’s role within the global system and the issues the continent wants the next UN Secretary-General to prioritise during the next phase of the organisation’s leadership.

Among the issues likely to dominate discussions are development, peace and security, climate change, economic inequality, multilateral cooperation and Africa’s representation in global decision-making institutions. The continent has consistently called for reforms that would give African countries a stronger voice in international organisations, particularly on matters affecting their economies and security.

Fayemi, who is also a former Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, has remained involved in discussions around African development, governance and international affairs. His role in the dialogue is expected to bring together voices from across the continent and the international community to examine what Africa expects from the next UN leadership.

The engagement comes at a time when the process of selecting a new UN Secretary-General is attracting increasing international attention. The dialogue is expected to help articulate Africa’s collective expectations and ensure that the continent’s concerns are considered as member states deliberate on the future leadership and priorities of the United Nations.
