The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have jointly filed a request for a 90-day extension to release documents related to an alleged 1990s drug investigation involving Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.  This request was submitted to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on May 1, 2025.

The extension request follows a court order mandating the release of non-exempt records in response to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests filed by American transparency advocate Aaron Greenspan.  Greenspan seeks information on a Chicago-based drug ring allegedly connected to Tinubu and others.

Previously, the FBI and DEA had issued "Glomar responses," refusing to confirm or deny the existence of the requested records.  However, Judge Beryl Howell ruled that such responses were inappropriate in this case, emphasizing the public interest in the disclosure of the information.

The agencies have indicated that they need additional time to locate and process the relevant documents.  The court must now decide whether to grant the extension or compel the agencies to expedite the release of the records
