FCT POLICE ENFORCE TINTED GLASS BAN, SEIZE OVER 30 VEHICLES

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has impounded more than 30 vehicles as it began enforcing the ban on tinted vehicles and other traffic violations across Abuja.

FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, disclosed this while addressing journalists on Friday, saying the operation targets vehicles with tinted glasses, concealed number plates, and improper registration.

According to Sanusi, the enforcement exercise was approved by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, as part of efforts to tackle crimes such as one-chance robberies, kidnappings, and other violent offences in the capital city.

“The IG has given us the mandate to begin the enforcement of the ban on the use of tinted vehicles and other offences,” he said.

The police commissioner explained that intelligence reports showed criminals often use tinted vehicles and hidden number plates to conceal their identities and evade arrest.

“This exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens, but to deny criminals the cover they exploit to commit crimes,” Sanusi added.

He revealed that over 30 vehicles had already been impounded during the ongoing operation.

“As part of this enforcement, over 30 vehicles operating with tinted glasses, covered number plates, and without proper registration have been seized,” he stated.

Sanusi warned that owners of the affected vehicles would face prosecution under the FCT Road Transport Regulations Act, 2023, and other applicable laws.

The commissioner urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and report suspicious activities to the police.

The enforcement comes despite uncertainty surrounding the Nigeria Police tinted glass permit policy.

Earlier this year, the Nigeria Police Force suspended nationwide enforcement of the tinted glass permit requirement after a court issued an interim order restraining its implementation.

However, the FCT Police Command said the current exercise is part of broader efforts to improve security and prevent criminals from operating undetected within Abuja.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
