A New Dawn for Northern Storytelling as FG Backs Arewa International Film Festival

The creative spotlight is finally turning North as the Federal Government has officially thrown its weight behind the maiden edition of the Arewa International Film Festival (AIFF). This exciting development marks a big step towards recognizing and promoting the rich cultural and storytelling heritage of Northern Nigeria.

Speaking at the festival’s unveiling in Abuja, the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, expressed strong federal support for the initiative. She described the festival as a “strategic platform” to amplify the talent, values, and historical depth of the Northern region.

“It is the responsibility of Arewa stakeholders to stop complaining about what Nigeria has not offered them, and instead showcase what they have to offer the country,” Musawa said.

This year’s theme, “Showcasing Untapped Potential and Promoting the Rich Historical Heritage and Storytelling of the Sahel Region,” highlights the festival’s mission: to shift the narrative, reclaim Northern identity, and bring global attention to the cultural wealth of the region.

The Federal Government also revealed ongoing plans to build film villages and boost production infrastructure across the country — including Northern Nigeria’s homegrown movie industry, Kannywood. These moves are part of broader efforts to grow Nigeria’s creative economy and create sustainable jobs through arts and culture.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
