FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CONFIRMS FATALITIES AND INJURIES IN WARRI–ITAKPE TRAIN ACCIDENT
The Federal Government has confirmed that four people lost their lives while 24 others sustained injuries following the derailment of the Warri–Itakpe Train Service in Agbor, Delta State.
The tragic incident occurred when several coaches of the passenger train left the tracks, prompting an immediate emergency response from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and other relevant authorities.
Rescue teams were swiftly deployed to the scene to assist passengers and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
According to government officials, all passengers on board have been accounted for, while investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the derailment. The NRC confirmed that four coaches were affected during the incident and assured the public that a comprehensive report would be released after preliminary findings are completed.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, expressed sadness over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He also wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery and directed relevant state agencies to support ongoing rescue and relief efforts.
The Warri–Itakpe rail corridor is one of Nigeria's busiest passenger rail routes, connecting communities across several states. The latest accident has renewed calls for enhanced railway safety measures and regular infrastructure inspections to prevent similar incidents in the future.
