New Super Eagles defender, Felix Agu, is dreaming big as he settles into life with the Nigerian national team. The 25-year-old Werder Bremen star says his top goals are to help Nigeria win the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco and make sure the team qualifies for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Agu, who was born in Germany to Nigerian parents, previously played for Germany’s U21 side in 2019. He featured in two friendly matches but has now fully committed to representing Nigeria at the senior level.

He recently made his Super Eagles debut at the Unity Cup in London, playing 83 minutes in a 2-2 draw against Jamaica. Nigeria went on to win the match through a penalty shootout to lift the trophy. It was a proud moment for Agu, who says wearing the green and white jersey is an honour he doesn’t take lightly.

Speaking with sports journalist Ayodele Olu Ibidapo, Agu opened up about why he initially chose to represent Germany at youth level.

“A few years ago when I played for the German U21s, it was more about comfort,” he said. “I already knew some of the players there, and at the time I hadn’t even changed clubs before, so it was a small, easy step. But now I feel ready. Playing for Nigeria is the biggest honour and I’m really happy to be part of the team.”

Now fully focused on Nigeria, Agu says he wants to help the Super Eagles win big trophies and return to the top of African football.

“Personally, doing something great with the national team means more than anything at club level. The goal is to win the AFCON — not just reach the final but actually win it. And we all want to see Nigeria at the World Cup. It’s coming up next year and we’ll do everything we can to be there.”

The defender also spoke about the warm welcome he received in camp. Despite being new to the squad, he found familiar faces and friendly teammates who helped him settle in fast.

“Everyone has been really nice to me. I already knew some players like Nathan Tella, Frank Onyeka, Boniface, and Maduka Okoye from Germany. That made it easier. The whole squad welcomed me with open arms.”

Looking at the bigger picture, Agu says he sees massive potential in the team. But he believes success will come only with the right attitude and a strong winning mindset.

“I see a lot of quality in this team. The players are really talented. But we need to switch on mentally and understand that there’s no room for mistakes — especially in the World Cup qualifiers. We have to treat every match like a final because if we don’t win, we don’t make it.”

He added that the same attitude is needed for AFCON. While the Super Eagles reached the final in the last edition, Agu wants them to go one step further.

“We need to do exactly what we did last time — but finish the job. I don’t think any team, not just in Africa, has the kind of attacking talent we have. It’s just about having the right mindset when we get on the pitch.”

With a hunger for success and confidence in the Super Eagles’ ability, Agu is ready to give everything for the green and white. And if his words are anything to go by, fans may have plenty to look forward to in the months ahead.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
