FG, ASUU SET FOR CRUCIAL MEETING MONDAY AS STRIKE THREAT LOOMS
The Federal Government will on Monday, November 24, and Tuesday, November 25, 2025, meet with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in a last-minute effort to prevent another nationwide university strike.
The meetings, convened by the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee, come after ASUU’s one-month ultimatum to the government expired on Saturday. The union had earlier suspended its two-week warning strike on October 22 to allow the government time to address its demands.
A member of ASUU’s National Executive Council, who spoke anonymously, accused the government of deliberately stalling negotiations.
“They have convened a meeting for Monday and Tuesday. I believe it’s delay tactics. They are trying to delay us from taking action. After their meeting, we will hold a NEC meeting to decide the next line of action,” the official said.
ASUU’s demands include the renegotiation of the 2009 FG–ASUU agreement, payment of outstanding salaries and earned academic allowances, and release of the university revitalisation fund. The union has warned that it may resume industrial action without further notice if progress is not made.
However, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, insists the government has already addressed the union’s concerns, reaffirming President Bola Tinubu’s directive against disruptions in public universities.
“We’re doing everything humanly possible to ensure that our students stay in school… We’ve met literally all their requirements,” Alausa told State House correspondents, adding that negotiations remain ongoing.
ASUU’s NEC is expected to meet after Monday and Tuesday’s discussions to determine whether a strike will proceed.
