FG DECLARES THURSDAY PUBLIC HOLIDAY FOR NIGERIA’S INDEPENDENCE

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on Wednesday in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad and urged citizens to use the occasion to promote unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

The minister said peace and stability were important for national development and called on Nigerians to uphold the values of the country’s founding fathers.

He also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, describing the country’s diversity as a strength and collective determination as important to building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

Tunji-Ojo assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remained committed to improving national security and public safety while creating an environment where citizens could live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations.

He added that the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda would continue to focus on building a better Nigeria for all citizens.

The minister urged Nigerians to use the Independence celebration to renew their commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence.
