FG LAUNCHES PHC REHABILITATION PROGRAMME TO STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY HEALTHCARE

The Federal Government has commenced the rollout of a major rehabilitation initiative for Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across Nigeria, aimed at enhancing access to quality community-based care.

The programme was formally launched at the Doya Primary Health Care Centre in Bauchi State, marking the beginning of efforts to revitalise thousands of PHCs nationwide. Officials say the intervention will integrate rehabilitation services, improve infrastructure, and equip facilities to better serve local populations, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

This move is part of broader strategies under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) to reduce out-of-pocket expenses, strengthen emergency response, and deliver essential services closer to citizens. The government has previously revitalised hundreds of PHCs, with plans to scale up significantly.

Health authorities emphasised that functional PHCs are critical to achieving universal health coverage and reducing pressure on secondary and tertiary facilities. The rehabilitation will focus on structural upgrades, staffing, equipment supply, and service integration, including rehabilitation for persons with disabilities.

Stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely response to long-standing gaps in Nigeria’s primary healthcare system. The Federal Government assured Nigerians of sustained commitment to improving health outcomes through community-centred interventions.

The rollout is expected to expand progressively to other states in the coming months.
