The Federal Government has announced plans to roll out another round of cash transfers to support vulnerable Nigerians, targeting 2.2 million households across the country.

The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, disclosed this during an interview with Channels Television on Monday. He explained that the fresh payments would begin before the end of August 2025.

According to the minister, the initiative is part of the government’s rapid conditional cash transfer scheme, designed to cushion the effects of economic hardship for low-income families.

“In the next few days, before the end of August, we are going to reach out to 2.2 million households,” Sununu said. “The process is such that the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) will harvest vulnerable Nigerians based on the lowest cadre in the national social register.”

So far, the government has disbursed ₦419 billion to about five million Nigerians, with 71% of the funds distributed in the northern region and 21% in the southern region.

The minister stressed that the program remains a key pillar in the government’s poverty-reduction strategy, aimed at providing immediate relief to the most vulnerable while long-term solutions are developed.

With millions of Nigerians struggling under rising living costs, the announcement comes as both a lifeline and a test of how far the intervention can go in easing current economic pressures.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
