FG TO UNVEIL DIGITAL CURRICULUM FOR COLLEGES OF EDUCATION

The Federal Government is set to unveil a new digital curriculum for all colleges of education in Nigeria, marking a major step towards modernising teacher training and equipping educators with 21st-century skills.

Minister of Education, Prof. Tunji Alausa, announced the development on Friday during an interactive session with provosts of colleges of education. He said the curriculum will be formally launched in the coming weeks as part of efforts to transform the quality of teacher preparation in the country.

“The digital curriculum will integrate technology into every aspect of teacher education. It covers digital pedagogy, e-learning tools, artificial intelligence in education, data analytics for classroom management, and online assessment techniques,” Prof. Alausa explained.

The initiative is designed to address longstanding gaps in teacher competency, especially in the use of digital tools for instruction. It will be rolled out across all public and private colleges of education, with mandatory training for lecturers to ensure effective implementation. The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has been tasked with coordinating the rollout, supported by TETFund and international partners.

Prof. Alausa noted that the new curriculum aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s focus on digital transformation in education. “We want our teachers to be digitally proficient so they can produce learners who are ready for a technology-driven economy,” he added.

Provosts of colleges of education welcomed the development, describing it as timely and transformative. The Chairman of the Provosts’ Conference, Dr. Ahmed Mohammed, said the curriculum would revolutionise teaching methodologies and improve graduate quality.

Implementation is expected to begin in the 2026/2027 academic session after a nationwide sensitisation programme. The government has also promised provision of necessary infrastructure, including computer laboratories and reliable internet connectivity in all colleges.

Education stakeholders believe the move will significantly raise the standard of teacher education in Nigeria and help close the digital divide in the nation’s schools. The unveiling ceremony is anticipated to attract key players from the education sector and technology industry.
