FG UNVEILS CHARTER TO STRENGTHEN TAXPAYER PROTECTION
The Federal Government has introduced a new taxpayer charter aimed at strengthening the rights and protections of taxpayers while improving transparency and accountability within Nigeria’s tax system.
The charter is expected to provide clearer guidance on the rights of taxpayers when dealing with tax authorities, including access to information, fair treatment, confidentiality, and opportunities to challenge tax decisions.
Officials said the initiative forms part of ongoing tax reforms designed to build greater trust between taxpayers and government agencies.
The government noted that a fair and transparent tax system is important for encouraging voluntary compliance and improving revenue collection.
The charter is also expected to clarify the responsibilities of taxpayers and the obligations of tax authorities in administering the tax system.
Tax experts said stronger taxpayer protections could improve confidence in the system and encourage individuals and businesses to meet their tax obligations.
They stressed that taxpayers need accessible channels for resolving disputes and obtaining clarification on tax matters without unnecessary delays.
The government also called for greater public awareness of the charter so that taxpayers understand their rights and responsibilities.
Stakeholders said effective implementation would be critical to ensuring that the new framework delivers meaningful improvements rather than remaining only a policy document.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to building a more efficient and taxpayer-friendly system that supports compliance while protecting the interests of individuals and businesses.
It said the charter would contribute to broader efforts to modernise Nigeria’s tax administration and strengthen the relationship between citizens, businesses, and government.
