FG UNVEILS SMART HIGHWAY PLAN WITH CCTV, SOLAR LIGHTS
The Federal Government has unveiled a new initiative to develop smart, durable, and technology-driven road infrastructure across the country, including the deployment of CCTV cameras and solar-powered street lighting on major highways.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this during a meeting with the management of Nigeria LNG Limited, noting that the project reflects a shift from conventional road construction to long-lasting, innovation-driven systems.
Umahi revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a N150bn extension of the Bodo-Bonny Road under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement. The project will utilise reinforced concrete technology designed to last between 50 and 100 years, significantly reducing maintenance costs.
According to him, the government is expanding its focus beyond road construction to include smart infrastructure elements that enhance safety, sustainability, and economic activity.
He said the plan includes the installation of solar-powered street lights to improve night visibility, as well as large-scale tree planting to support environmental sustainability and beautification of road corridors.
The minister also disclosed that CCTV surveillance systems would be deployed along key highways, supported by monitoring centres to enable rapid emergency response.
“We are introducing CCTV systems along major highways. This will allow us to respond to emergencies in less than 10 minutes,” he said.
Additional features of the project include rest areas, service stations, and operational hubs to support road users and maintenance activities.
To address congestion and improve logistics, the government also plans to integrate truck parking facilities along the highways, with ongoing engagement with host communities to secure land for the initiative.
Umahi emphasised that the project would be completed within 12 months, with strict measures to prevent cost overruns.
He added that the administration is committed to delivering infrastructure that enhances safety, drives economic growth, and improves the quality of life for Nigerians.
The Bodo-Bonny Road, which links Bonny Island, home to major oil and gas assets, to the mainland in Rivers State, is considered a critical economic corridor expected to boost trade and connectivity in the region.
