The Federal Government has launched a new National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System and urged Nigerians to find and start using their assigned postcodes.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the launch on Thursday, describing the system as an important step towards making locations across Nigeria easier to identify.

The system, operated by the Nigerian Postal Service, assigns a unique 11-character digital postcode to every addressable building in the country.

According to Tijani, the codes provide precise, GIS-enabled location references that can make it easier for businesses to reach customers, families to share accurate locations during emergencies and government agencies to deliver essential services.

He said reliable postcodes would also help create the infrastructure needed to support President Bola Tinubu’s ambition of building a $1tn economy by making it easier for Nigerians and businesses to participate in economic activities.

Tijani encouraged Nigerians to search for their postcodes through the official Digital Postcode website and share them with family members, friends and businesses.

The system identifies locations through five levels: state, local government area, district, area and building. Each addressable building is assigned its own unique code.

NIPOST had earlier explained that the digital postcode system would support deliveries, emergency response, public service delivery and e-commerce by providing a standard and reliable way to identify locations across the country.
