The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has announced that professors in Nigerian public universities will now receive a monthly top-up of N140,000.

Alausa made the disclosure on Wednesday during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television. He spoke about the agreement reached that day between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

“A professor will now receive a monthly top-up of over N140,000, as President Tinubu has introduced a new category of allowance for academic staff called the ‘professorial cadre’ allowance, which is an enhanced additional package,” Alausa said.

He added, “Today, we have the funding to support the 40% salary increase granted to our lecturers across all institutions, along with nine enhanced Earned Academic Allowances, now structured more effectively.

“The true value of any agreement is seen not at the point of signing but in its implementation. We have already begun this process. The Chairman of the National Salary Income and Wages Commission worked tirelessly between December 20 and 30 to ensure the circular supporting the welfare component of the agreement was released.

“When negotiating this agreement, the President made it clear that he would not authorize an agreement he knew could not be implemented,” Alausa noted.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
