FINNISH COURT OF APPEAL REDUCES SIMON EKPA’S CUSTODIAL SENTENCE TO FOUR YEARS
Appellate bench upholds terrorism-related convictions of Biafran separatist leader but modifies overall sentence duration imposed by lower district tribunal
A Court of Appeal in Finland has reduced the prison sentence of Nigerian-born Biafran separatist leader Simon Ekpa from six years to four years.
The appellate judgment modified the earlier ruling delivered by the Päijät-Häme District Court, which had found Ekpa guilty of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent and participating in activities aimed at establishing an independent Biafran state in southeastern Nigeria.
While the Court of Appeal upheld the core convictions relating to terrorism and illegal incitement, the bench opted to adjust the total custodial term after reviewing the sentencing parameters and trial arguments.
Ekpa, who has remained in Finnish custody since his arrest by the National Bureau of Investigation in late 2024, had consistently denied the primary charges, though admitting to a minor financial infraction during preliminary proceedings.
Legal representatives confirmed that the appellate ruling is not yet final, as both the defense team and state prosecutors retain the option to seek leave to appeal the decision before the Supreme Court of Finland.
The judicial proceedings continue to be monitored closely by international legal observers and Nigerian diplomatic authorities, who have repeatedly cited Ekpa’s broadcasts and online directives as major factors driving security instability and violent enforce-at-home declarations across Nigeria's South-East region.
