FIRE SERVICE RAISES ALARM OVER ‘SILENT KILLER’ GAS SAFETY RISKS

The Federal Fire Service has raised an alarm over the dangers of gas leaks, warning Nigerians about the risks of what it described as a “silent killer” in homes and commercial buildings.

Officials said the warning is aimed at increasing public awareness about the safe handling, storage, and use of cooking gas, particularly liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which is widely used across the country.

According to the agency, unnoticed gas leaks can quickly lead to explosions or suffocation, especially in poorly ventilated spaces or where safety precautions are ignored.

The Fire Service advised residents to regularly check gas cylinders, hoses, and regulators for leaks, and to avoid leaving gas appliances unattended while in use.

It also urged Nigerians to ensure proper ventilation in kitchens and to switch off gas cylinders when not in use to reduce risks of accidents.

Authorities said public education campaigns will be intensified to promote fire safety and reduce avoidable domestic incidents linked to gas misuse.

The agency reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property through continued awareness and emergency response efforts.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
