Nigerian businesses are accelerating the integration of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) e-invoicing system as the mandatory compliance deadline approaches at the end of the year.

Several companies across different sectors have intensified efforts to upgrade their accounting and billing systems to align with the new electronic invoicing platform introduced by the NRS. The move is aimed at ensuring seamless compliance and avoiding penalties associated with non-adherence.

The Director General of the NRS, Mr. Adebayo Olawale, commended the proactive steps taken by many firms while urging others to fast-track their integration process. “The e-invoicing system is designed to improve transparency, reduce tax evasion, and enhance revenue collection. We encourage all businesses to complete their integration before the deadline,” Olawale stated.

The e-invoicing platform allows for real-time transmission of invoices to the NRS, enabling better tracking and verification of transactions. It is expected to significantly reduce the incidence of fake invoices and improve the efficiency of tax administration in the country.

Industry groups have organised training sessions and technical support programmes to assist small and medium enterprises in adopting the new system. Many firms have reported initial challenges with system compatibility but are making steady progress with the support of technology providers.

Tax consultants have advised businesses to prioritise the integration process to avoid last-minute rushes and potential disruptions to their operations. They also highlighted the long-term benefits of the system, including easier reconciliation and reduced audit risks.

As the deadline draws closer, the NRS has promised to provide additional support and clarification to businesses still facing challenges with the integration. The authority has also warned that non-compliant firms will face sanctions starting from the beginning of next year.

The accelerated adoption of the e-invoicing system is seen as a major step towards modernising Nigeria’s tax administration and improving the ease of doing business in the country.
