Suspected armed herders have reportedly killed five people in a fresh attack on Tse Ameen community in Mbapa Council Ward, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to residents, the attackers invaded the community on Saturday night and launched an assault while villagers were asleep.

A local source told journalists on Monday that five bodies were recovered on Sunday, while several other residents were still missing.

The source said the victims included three males and two females.

However, the Benue State Police Command gave a slightly different casualty figure.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the incident and stated that four bodies were officially recovered.

She said security agencies were aware of the attack and investigations were ongoing.

Meanwhile, Governor Hyacinth Alia had earlier sympathised with residents of Gwer West during a meeting with recently rescued abducted passengers at the Government House on Sunday.

The governor also urged security agencies to track down and arrest those responsible for the killings.

The latest violence adds to growing security concerns in parts of Benue State, where repeated attacks have displaced communities and claimed many lives.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
