As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to intensify, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State General Sani Abacha, has officially announced his bid for the presidency.

Al-Mustapha revealed his intention to contest under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) during a meeting with the party’s state executive committee in Minna, Niger State.

Expressing concern over the country’s challenges, he said, “I am deeply troubled by the current state of our nation. But I believe that with the right leadership and dedication, Nigeria can be restored. The journey may be tough, but united, we can build the nation we deserve.”

He emphasized that the meeting was part of a nationwide engagement strategy with key stakeholders in preparation for the 2027 elections.

In response, the SDP Chairman in Niger State, Alhaji Buhari Yakubu Yarima, praised Al-Mustapha’s declaration, describing it as a demonstration of commitment to national service.

“With visionary candidates and a solid agenda, the SDP is poised to make a significant impact in 2027,” Yarima stated.

Meanwhile, there had been earlier speculations that the SDP was being considered as a platform for an opposition coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. However, Adewale Adebayo, the party’s former presidential flagbearer, clarified that the SDP is not involved in any such coalition.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
