Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has narrowly escaped a potentially fatal road accident in Lagos.

The ex-Nigeria international revealed the incident on Sunday through his Instagram page, where he shared a video showing severe damage to the front of his SUV.

According to Onazi, the crash was caused by another vehicle allegedly driven by two intoxicated individuals.

Reacting to the incident, the former Lazio and Trabzonspor midfielder called on authorities to intensify efforts against drunk driving in Lagos, warning that it has become a serious and growing threat on the roads.

“The government needs to urgently address the issue of drunk driving in Lagos. I almost lost my life last night because of two drunk guys in a car,” Onazi wrote.

The accident occurred only days after the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner celebrated his birthday, which attracted goodwill messages and public tributes from notable Nigerian football personalities, including former Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama and ex-Premier League striker Peter Odemwingie.

Onazi’s ordeal has further heightened concerns over road safety in Lagos, where reckless and alcohol-impaired driving continue to endanger motorists and pedestrians alike.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
