FOUR AVIATION UNIONS SEEK NAMA PRIVATISATION

Four major aviation unions have called for the privatisation of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), citing inefficiency, poor funding, and the need for better service delivery in the nation’s airspace management.

The unions the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP), the Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA), and the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON)  made the demand in a joint statement on Friday.

The unions argued that privatisation would bring in the much-needed capital, technology, and management expertise required to modernise the agency and improve safety and efficiency in the Nigerian airspace. “NAMA is struggling with funding and outdated infrastructure. Privatisation is the way forward to ensure reliable and world-class air navigation services,” the statement read.

The unions also criticised the current management of the agency, accusing it of poor accountability and failure to utilise available resources effectively. They urged the Federal Government to consider a public-private partnership model that would guarantee efficiency while protecting national interest and workers’ rights.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has yet to respond to the unions’ demand. However, aviation experts have expressed mixed views on the proposal. While some agree that privatisation could bring efficiency, others caution against hasty decisions that could compromise national security and sovereignty over the airspace.

The call for privatisation comes amid ongoing challenges in the aviation sector, including frequent flight delays, safety concerns, and infrastructure deficits. The unions have promised to engage relevant stakeholders and the National Assembly to push for the necessary legislative framework.

The Federal Government had earlier indicated its intention to reform critical agencies in the aviation sector to improve performance and attract investment. The demand by the four unions is expected to spark further debate on the future of NAMA and other government-owned aviation agencies.
