FOUR DEAD AS WILDFIRE TRAPS RESPONSE TEAM IN INDONESIAN NATIONAL PARK
Tragedy strikes Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java as park personnel, security guards, and volunteers are overwhelmed by dense smoke and rapidly advancing flames during dry-season containment operations
Four men have died and two others sustained severe burns while attempting to contain a fast-spreading wildfire in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, located in Indonesia's East Java province.
According to Indonesia's Forestry Ministry and local emergency officials, the victims were part of a 12-member deployment consisting of national park officers, security guards, and local volunteers engaged in frontline firefighting efforts.
The team became trapped on Thursday afternoon when strong gusting winds caused the blaze to shift rapidly across dry grassland vegetation in the Mentigen and Pusung Lingker sectors, encircling the crew in thick smoke.
National park spokesman Endrip Wahyutama confirmed that two park officers and two security guards lost their lives, with three dying at the scene and the fourth succumbing to severe injuries after transport to a local hospital.
Two additional personnel, including a volunteer firefighter and a hotel security officer who assisted in emergency response efforts, are receiving medical treatment for critical burn injuries.
The tragic incident comes amid a sharp surge in environmental hotspots across Sumatra and Kalimantan, as Indonesian authorities struggle against months-long dry weather conditions that continue to fan forest fires and generate dense, hazardous regional haze.
