Police Officers Nabbed for Extorting N200K from Offa Polytechnic Student

Four police officers are currently in detention following their alleged involvement in the extortion of a student from the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State.

The officers, who are members of the Anti-Cultism Unit, reportedly stopped the student, Taiwo Kayode Taye, while he was on his way to Osogbo, Osun State. The incident happened at Erin-Ile, a town near Offa.

According to reports, Taiwo was detained after he refused to unlock his phone. He was then moved to Ijagbo Police Division, and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Ilorin. There, the officers allegedly forced him to unlock his phone and went ahead to transfer N200,000 from his account to an account named Lucy Akor.

Following public outrage, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, ordered an immediate investigation and the arrest of the officers involved.

In an update, CP Ojo confirmed the officers had been arrested and detained at the ‘A’ Division in Ilorin. He strongly condemned their actions, describing them as a serious breach of professional conduct.

“The officers have been arrested and investigation is in full swing. They will not go unpunished,” the Commissioner assured.

The incident has once again raised concerns about police misconduct and abuse of power in Nigeria, particularly involving unlawful stop-and-search operations and extortion of young citizens.

The Kwara Police Command has pledged transparency in handling the matter and emphasized its commitment to rooting out bad elements within the force.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
