FULL TEXT: RONALDO’S RETIREMENT LETTER TO PORTUGAL FANS
Cristiano Ronaldo has paid an emotional tribute to Portugal’s supporters as he announced the end of his 23-year international career.
In a farewell letter, Ronaldo said it was time to hand over the national team shirt and captain’s armband to the next generation.
He described the decision as difficult, reflecting on a journey that began in August 2003 and transformed his life.
Looking back, Ronaldo said his strongest memories were about people rather than goals, records or trophies.
He recalled supporters around the world, particularly Portuguese emigrants who felt closer to home while watching the national team.
“Football is much bigger than a game. Football is about people,” he wrote.
Ronaldo acknowledged both triumphs and disappointments, saying he had always demanded more of himself and remained proud to represent his country.
He thanked his teammates for sharing victories, defeats and the moments behind the scenes that shaped their careers.
“I had the privilege of being your captain, but no captain walks alone,” he said.
The forward also recognised coaches, medical teams, kit managers and other staff whose contributions often went unseen.
He thanked his family for accepting the absences and sacrifices that came with international football.
Turning to Portugal’s future, Ronaldo encouraged younger players to keep dreaming and believe they could reach new heights.
He ended by describing the unity he felt whenever the national anthem played—a moment when club loyalties and personal differences disappeared.
“There is only one passion: Portugal.”
