FUNKE AKINDELE DECLARES INTENT TO RETURN TO POLITICS, SAYS SHE’S READY TO GIVE BACK
Award-winning Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, has announced her decision to return to politics, nearly two years after contesting as the Deputy Governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State during the 2023 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on the popular talk show WithChude, Akindele expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, despite the loss, and said her political journey was both challenging and transformational.
“I’m glad I ventured into politics. Would I do it again? Absolutely,” she affirmed. “I have a strong desire to contribute and give back — that’s what drew me into politics in the first place.”
Although she had remained silent about the outcome of the 2023 elections and even removed campaign materials from her social media pages, Akindele opened up about the powerful lessons and insights she gained from that season.
She recalled the intense atmosphere of Nigerian politics, marked by chaos and conflict, and shared how observing female politicians helped her develop confidence and strength.
“Witnessing the tension, the shouting, the violence — it was eye-opening. But I watched female politicians speak with authority and command respect, and I told myself, ‘You can do this too.’ That gave me courage.”
Akindele noted that her experience in politics not only built her confidence but also sparked a deeper interest in civic education and national development.
“I learned that to lead, you must be bold and fearless. I now read more, study more, and I’ve become more aware of the political structures in my state and country.”
With her rising political consciousness and influence, Funke Akindele’s return could reshape conversations about women’s participation in politics, especially in Lagos State. While she has not yet declared a specific position or timeline, her reentry could significantly impact future elections and public engagement.
