Renowned Nigerian actress-turned-politician Funke Akindele has unveiled her renewed political ambitions after an earlier unsuccessful bid.

ESSENTIAL NEWS reports that popular Nigerian actress-turned-politician Funke Akindele has confirmed her intention to re-enter politics, following her previous attempt in the 2023 Lagos State governorship election.

Akindele was the running mate to Abdulazeez Adediran, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, in the election that saw them lose to Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In the wake of the defeat, she wiped her social media clean of all political content and remained silent on the subject.

However, during a recent interview on the inaugural live edition of the ‘WithChude’ podcast, Akindele broke her silence, expressing a renewed commitment to her political journey.

“I joined politics to give back and support. But stepping in, I witnessed the chaos—the shouting, the violence. Then I began to observe strong female politicians like Mummy Abike Dabiri. The way they speak and command respect inspired me. I told myself, ‘You can do this too.’

“I stood up and spoke. I learned you need to be bold, courageous, and resilient. Fear only holds you back. Politics taught me that. I also got to understand numbers, read more, and became more informed about my country and state. Now, when I speak, I speak with facts and data,” she said.

When asked if she would return to the political scene, Akindele responded confidently, “Oh yes.”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
