GAMBIA CRACKS DOWN ON UNAUTHORISED INTERNET RESELLERS AND WI-FI HOTSPOTS

The Gambian government has launched a major crackdown on unauthorised internet resellers and illegal Wi-Fi hotspots across the country.

The move, led by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) and supported by the Gambia Police Force, targets individuals and businesses offering internet services without proper licences. Authorities say many of these operations are operating illegally and failing to meet quality and safety standards.

In the past few days, officials have shut down several unauthorised Wi-Fi hotspots in Greater Banjul, Brikama, and other urban areas. Some operators have had their equipment seized, while others received warnings to regularise their operations or close down.

PURA officials explained that the crackdown is necessary to protect consumers, ensure fair competition, and improve overall service quality. Many illegal resellers buy bulk data from licensed providers and resell it at higher prices through home routers and small hotspots, often with poor speeds and unreliable service.

For ordinary Gambians, especially young people and small business owners who rely on affordable internet for education, work, and communication, the situation has been mixed. While some welcome the move for better service, others worry that it could lead to higher prices in the short term.

The government says licensed internet service providers will now be closely monitored to ensure they deliver quality service at reasonable prices. It also urged people running small Wi-Fi businesses to apply for proper licences so they can operate legally.

This development is part of broader efforts by the Gambian authorities to regulate the fast-growing digital sector. Internet usage has increased significantly in recent years, especially among the youth, making reliable and safe connectivity more important than ever.

PURA has warned that anyone caught operating illegal internet services after the warning period will face full sanctions, including fines and possible prosecution.

The crackdown is expected to continue in the coming weeks as authorities move across the country to enforce the rules.

Gambians have been advised to patronise only registered and licensed internet providers for better protection and service quality.
