Former presidential candidate and energy entrepreneur Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission to adjust the timetable for political party primaries to September.

In an open letter, he argued that the proposed adjustment aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and would strengthen internal democracy within political parties.

Olawepo-Hashim said the current schedule for early primaries places unnecessary pressure on parties and could undermine transparency, fairness, and inclusiveness in the selection of candidates.

He warned that rushed primaries could increase internal disputes, disenfranchise aspirants, and weaken public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act provides a wider window for parties to conduct primaries up to mid-September, which he believes should be fully utilised.

He stressed that allowing more time for party processes would improve the credibility of candidates emerging for elections and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic system.

Olawepo-Hashim also urged broader electoral reforms to ensure fairness, reduce tensions within parties, and enhance trust in electoral institutions.

He maintained that extending the primary timeline would support political stability and promote national cohesion as the country moves toward the 2027 elections.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
