GENEVIEVE NNAJI RETURNS TO SCREEN IN BBC THRILLER SERIES ‘WAHALA’
Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji is making a much-anticipated return to acting with a lead role in Wahala, a new six-part drama series from BBC Studios.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. This marks Nnaji’s first major on-screen role in nearly eight years, since her 2018 Netflix film Lionheart, which she also directed.
Wahala, adapted from Nikki May’s bestselling novel of the same name, is a thriller that follows four Nigerian-British women living in London. Their close friendship begins to fall apart after the arrival of a wealthy and mysterious woman named Isobel. The story explores themes of friendship, identity, ambition, secrets, and the pressures of womanhood.
Genevieve joins an all-star cast that includes Cush Jumbo, Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, and Susan Wokoma. BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko adapted the novel for the screen. The series will air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
Speaking about the project, Genevieve expressed excitement: “It’s an intriguing story and I’m happy to be part of it.” She will be working with a strong team of British and Nigerian talent.
The news has excited many fans across Africa, especially in Nigeria, where Genevieve remains one of the most respected and loved actresses. Her return to acting is being celebrated as a big moment for Nollywood and African storytelling on the global stage.
Filming for Wahala has already begun. The series is produced by Firebird Pictures, a division of BBC Studios.
This collaboration between BBC Studios and top Nigerian talent highlights the growing influence of African stories and actors in international television. Many are now looking forward to seeing Genevieve bring her signature presence to the screen once again.
