GHANA ADVANCES DISCUSSIONS ON SUSTAINABLE PRICING MODEL FOR DIGITAL TERRESTRIAL TV PLATFORM

The Ghanaian government is making progress in talks aimed at creating a sustainable pricing model for the country’s Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) platform.

Officials are currently engaging with key stakeholders, including broadcasters, signal distributors, and consumer groups, to find a pricing system that works for both operators and viewers. The goal is to ensure the long-term survival of the DTT platform while keeping subscription costs affordable for ordinary Ghanaians.

The Digital Terrestrial TV platform was introduced to improve television quality and expand access across the country. However, questions around how much viewers should pay and how revenue should be shared among operators have slowed its full rollout.

Discussions are focusing on finding the right balance  one that allows companies to recover their investments and maintain quality service, while preventing the cost from becoming a burden on households, especially in rural areas.

Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar, said the government is committed to a model that supports local content development and protects consumers. She noted that a fair pricing system is important for the future of broadcasting in Ghana.

Many Ghanaians have welcomed the ongoing talks, hoping the final decision will lead to better television services without sharp increases in what they pay monthly. Some have expressed concern that high prices could push people back to free-to-air options or discourage adoption of the digital platform.

The government is expected to conclude discussions and announce the new pricing framework in the coming weeks. This decision will play a key role in determining how quickly and widely digital television spreads across the country.

This development is being watched closely by industry players as Ghana continues its transition from analogue to fully digital broadcasting.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
