Ghana and the United States have agreed to strengthen their partnership in the digital sector, with a strong emphasis on satellite technology and the development of responsible artificial intelligence policies.

The agreement was reached during high-level talks between Ghanaian officials and a delegation from the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Both sides expressed commitment to working together to expand digital infrastructure and build local capacity in emerging technologies.

Under the new cooperation, the U.S. will support Ghana’s efforts to improve satellite-based internet connectivity, especially in rural and underserved communities. This is expected to help bridge the digital divide and support key sectors such as agriculture, education, and healthcare. The partnership will also focus on developing clear policies and regulations for the ethical use of artificial intelligence.

Ghana’s Minister for Communications and Digitalisation described the collaboration as timely and strategic. She noted that access to reliable satellite technology will play a vital role in achieving the country’s digital transformation goals, while AI policy development will ensure the technology benefits citizens safely and fairly.

For many Ghanaians, particularly in remote areas, improved satellite connectivity could mean better access to online education, market information for farmers, and telemedicine services. The partnership is also expected to create new opportunities for young Ghanaians in tech-related fields.

Ghana has been making steady progress in its digital agenda, including the rollout of nationwide fibre optic projects and the promotion of digital skills. This latest agreement with the United States adds to growing international support for the country’s ambition to become a digital leader in West Africa.

Both countries say they will establish a joint working group to implement the new initiatives. Concrete projects and timelines are expected to be announced in the coming months as Ghana and the U.S. move to translate this cooperation into real benefits for citizens.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
