GHANA SUMMONS SOUTH AFRICA ENVOY OVER ‘XENOPHOBIC INCIDENTS’
Ghana has summoned South Africa’s envoy following a series of alleged xenophobic incidents involving foreign nationals, including Ghanaians living in the country.
The move came after reports and videos circulated online showing Ghanaians being harassed in recent days.
According to Ghana’s Foreign Ministry, one of the incidents occurred in KwaZulu-Natal province, where a Ghanaian legal resident was confronted and told to leave South Africa and “fix his country.”
Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa raised the matter during a meeting with South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner, Thando Dalamba.
In a statement issued late Thursday, Ghana also warned of growing tensions, saying foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, had been advised to remain indoors for their safety.
During the meeting, Ablakwa reminded the envoy of Ghana’s historical support for the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa.
He stressed that attacks and harassment of law-abiding individuals go against the principles of African unity and solidarity.
South Africa has long attracted both documented and undocumented African migrants because of its relatively advanced economy.
However, the country has experienced repeated anti-migrant protests and occasional violence, with unemployment remaining above 30 percent.
Official 2022 statistics indicate that South Africa has about 2.4 million foreign-born residents, representing roughly four percent of the population.
