GHANAIAN TWIN BROTHERS ADMIT ROLE IN $9 MILLION ROMANCE SCAM
Ghanaian twins Jamal and Kamal Abubakari could each face up to 20 years in prison after admitting their involvement in a romance fraud scheme that caused more than $9 million in losses.
The 22-year-old brothers pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in October 2026, alongside 53-year-old Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie.
Court documents show that the scheme operated between July 2024 and April 2026. Members used false identities on dating platforms and social media to gain victims’ trust through supposed romantic relationships before persuading them to send money.
Most of those targeted were elderly Americans living across 25 US states. Victims were also identified in Germany and Austria.
Some of the proceeds were sent to accomplices in Ghana and other locations.
As part of their plea agreements, the three defendants agreed to give up luxury jewellery and other valuables seized when they were arrested.
The twins will be sentenced on February 9, 2027, while Opoku-Boachie is scheduled to appear for sentencing the following day. Each faces a maximum prison term of 20 years.
