Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged all levels of government to introduce incentives that will encourage medical professionals to remain in Nigeria, addressing the ongoing wave of migration known as “Japa.”

Obasanjo made the appeal on Monday while commissioning a hospital in Zamfara State. He highlighted the critical need to retain trained healthcare workers within the country amid increasing emigration in search of better opportunities.

“For hospitals—especially now that many of our trained medical personnel are leaving the country in search of better conditions—you must provide some form of incentive to keep them here,” he stated.

He stressed that while infrastructure and modern equipment are essential, quality healthcare delivery ultimately relies on competent human resources.

“Our hospitals must perform. To do that, you need the right environment—which includes renovation—modern equipment, and, most importantly, qualified personnel,” Obasanjo explained.

His remarks reflect growing public concern over the mass departure of Nigerian doctors and other health professionals seeking improved pay and working conditions abroad.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
