GOLFERS GATHER IN EDO FOR IG @60 INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT
The Benin Club Golf Section in Edo State became a lively sporting hub on Wednesday as more than 250 professional and amateur golfers took part in the Ignatius Aigbokhaode Invitational Golf Tournament.
The four-day event, held in honour of Ignatius Aigbokhaode, popularly known as IG, is part of celebrations marking his 60th birthday.
The tournament officially began with caddies and eaglets taking to the course, while professional golfers are expected to compete on Thursday. The competition will continue through the weekend, with its grand finale scheduled for Saturday.
According to the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Andrew Momodu, the event is designed as a tribute to Aigbokhaode’s long-standing contribution to the game of golf and his role in bringing players together over the years.
He explained that different categories of players will participate across the tournament days, including professionals, men and women handicap groups, as well as veterans and super veterans.
Momodu also noted that golfers from several clubs across Nigeria are participating, including Ikoyi Golf Club in Lagos, IBB Golf and Country Club in Abuja, Port Harcourt Golf Club, Asaba’s Ibori Golf and Country Club, and others.
The final day of the tournament will feature top handicap players, invited guests, and special appearances, followed by a prize presentation ceremony in the evening.
The event is expected to conclude with entertainment and celebrations, marking not only a competitive golf tournament but also a tribute filled with friendship, sportsmanship, and appreciation for IG’s impact on the game.
