GORDON ADMITS BARCELONA GAVE NEWCASTLE A FOOTBALLING LESSON IN UCL CLASH
Newcastle United forward, Anthony Gordon, has confessed that facing Barcelona in the Champions League was unlike anything he has experienced before.
The Magpies fell 2-1 to the Spanish giants on Thursday night at St James’ Park. On-loan Manchester United forward, Marcus Rashford, struck twice for Barça, while Gordon managed a late consolation goal in the 90th minute. Despite Newcastle’s push, the visitors held firm until the final whistle.
Speaking to BeIN Sports after the game, Gordon admitted that Barcelona’s style of play was on another level compared to top Premier League sides.
“I think the way they keep the ball was a learning experience. We don’t play against that kind of style in England, not at that level anyway. I thought they were the best I’ve played against in that sense of the game,” he said.
The England international praised Barcelona’s midfield movement and fluidity, describing it as “really top-level football” that made it difficult for Newcastle to apply their usual high-intensity pressing game.
“We’ve played against top teams — City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal — but the way they pass the ball and combine in midfield made it really hard for us to press,” Gordon added.
The defeat leaves Newcastle with lessons to learn but also with valuable experience against one of Europe’s finest footballing sides.
