GOWON URGES POLITICIANS TO END DESPERATION AND “DO-OR-DIE” POLITICS
Former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, has called on politicians in Nigeria to abandon desperation and reject “do-or-die” politics in the country’s electoral process.
He made the appeal while speaking on the need for more peaceful, transparent, and issue-based politics ahead of future elections.
Gowon warned that political desperation often fuels tension, violence, and mistrust among citizens, stressing that elections should be seen as a contest of ideas rather than a battle for survival.
He urged political leaders and supporters to prioritise national unity and stability over personal or party interests, adding that democracy can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace and fairness.
The former military leader also encouraged stronger respect for democratic institutions and electoral processes, noting that credibility in elections remains key to public confidence in governance.
His remarks come amid ongoing conversations about political conduct and election-related tensions across different parts of the country.
Stakeholders continue to call for reforms and civic education to reduce electoral violence and promote peaceful participation in Nigeria’s democratic system.
Gowon’s statement adds to a long-standing debate about the nature of political competition and its impact on national development.
