GREEK WOMAN SENTENCED TO THREE LIFE TERMS FOR MURDERING HER THREE DAUGHTERS

A Greek woman, previously sentenced to life for murdering her nine-year-old daughter, received two additional life terms on Tuesday for the deaths of her two other children.

An Athens court ruled that Roula Pispirigou suffocated her infant daughters, Malena and Irida, in 2019 and 2021 in a failed attempt to stop her husband from leaving her.

Pispirigou, 36, maintains her innocence and is expected to appeal the verdict.

In March 2024, a separate court had already convicted her of killing her eldest daughter, nine-year-old Georgina.

This prompted a reexamination of Malena and Irida's deaths, which revealed they had been asphyxiated, leading to a new murder trial.

Earlier this month, trial prosecutor Vassiliki Dimopoulou told the Athens court that Pispirigou killed her children "to preserve her marriage."

"This demonstrates an individual who acted deliberately and with careful planning," she stated.

Pispirigou, a trained nurse from Patras, was convicted last year of poisoning Georgina with ketamine in January 2022.

Ketamine is commonly used as an anaesthetic in veterinary medicine but also serves as a treatment for certain cases of depression.

Georgina passed away while hospitalized, having been admitted multiple times over the previous 10 months due to convulsions that left her tetraplegic.

The court determined that her mother had attempted to kill her during at least one of her earlier hospital stays.

Her younger daughters, Malena and Iris, were just three and a half years old and six months old when they died in 2019 and 2021, respectively.

Malena was initially diagnosed with acute liver failure, while Iris’s death was attributed to heart failure. However, postmortem tests conducted after Georgina's death revealed that both had been suffocated.

Greek media have likened Pispirigou to a “modern-day Medea,” referencing the mythological figure who killed her children after their father abandoned her for another woman.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
