Grene Capital, an Africa-focused real assets manager, has completed a significant solar expansion at Jabi Lake Mall, raising its installed solar capacity from 600kWp to 1.5MWp.

The project adds approximately 900kWp of new photovoltaic capacity in partnership with Elektron Renewables, which handled project development. This upgrade represents a 150% increase in the mall’s solar footprint and reinforces its position as Nigeria’s first solar-powered mall.

The enhanced system is projected to generate about 175,000 kWh of clean electricity monthly. It will substantially reduce reliance on diesel generators, cut approximately 1,680 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, and bolster resilience against grid instability and rising energy costs.

Tolu Sokenu, Partner at Grene Capital, described the investment as a demonstration of disciplined, long-term capital deployment. “This project reflects how disciplined, long-term capital investment can strengthen an asset’s performance and resilience at the same time,” he said. “We look for opportunities to enhance the quality and relevance of our assets... and future-proof a market-leading mall.”

Sianny Ayodele, Head of Elektron Renewables, highlighted the growing importance of distributed renewable energy for commercial assets across Africa. She noted that such projects deliver measurable development impact while supporting economic growth.

Originally commissioned around 2020, the mall’s solar initiative aligns with Grene Capital’s ESG strategy, which emphasises operational efficiency and long-term asset resilience following its spin-out from global investor Actis.

This development underscores Nigeria’s advancing adoption of rooftop solar in the retail sector amid ongoing energy challenges.
