GROUP DECRIES NEGLECT OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES, URGES EARLY INTERVENTION

A group advocating for the rights and welfare of children with disabilities has expressed concern over the neglect of affected children, calling for early intervention, improved access to healthcare and inclusive educational opportunities.

The group warned that many children with disabilities continue to face barriers that limit their development, including delayed diagnosis, inadequate medical support, discrimination and limited access to specialised learning services.

It stressed that early intervention is essential to helping children develop their abilities, improve their independence and participate more fully in family and community life. Identifying developmental difficulties early and providing appropriate support can improve outcomes for children with physical, intellectual, sensory and developmental disabilities.

The organisation also raised concerns about the stigma and misconceptions that often surround disability. In some communities, affected children may be excluded from social activities or denied educational opportunities because of negative attitudes and a lack of awareness.

Such treatment can affect their emotional wellbeing, learning and long-term development. The group therefore urged parents, caregivers and community leaders to recognise children with disabilities as individuals with rights, abilities and the potential to contribute meaningfully to society.

It called on government authorities to strengthen policies and programmes that support early screening, diagnosis, rehabilitation and inclusive education. It also advocated better training for healthcare workers and teachers to enable them to identify children’s needs and provide appropriate assistance.

The group emphasised that support should not be limited to medical treatment. Children with disabilities also require accessible schools, assistive devices, trained caregivers and environments that allow them to participate safely in everyday activities.

Parents and guardians were encouraged to seek professional guidance when they notice developmental concerns rather than delay assessment because of stigma or misinformation. Early support, the group noted, can help families understand their children’s needs and access available services.

The call comes amid broader efforts to promote the rights of persons with disabilities and improve their inclusion in Nigeria’s social and economic development.

The organisation maintained that protecting children with disabilities requires coordinated action from government agencies, healthcare providers, schools, families and civil society groups.

It stressed that early intervention and inclusive support systems are essential to ensuring that no child is denied the opportunity to learn, develop and reach their full potential because of a disability.
