A group of grassroots organisations from Katsina State is pushing for the creation of a new state — Karadua State — from the existing Katsina South (Funtua) Senatorial Zone.

The Coalition of Funtua Community-Based Organisations made their case during a one-day public hearing organised by the National Assembly Committee on Constitution Review. The group presented a detailed memorandum supporting the proposal.

Speaking at the event, Alhaji Tukur Lawal, Secretary of the Movement for the Creation of Karadua State and Vice Chairman of the coalition, said the demand is rooted in the desire for fairness, improved governance, and regional development.

According to him, the proposed Karadua State would consist of 11 local government areas: Funtua, Bakori, Malumfashi, Kafur, Danja, Kankara, Sabuwa, Dandume, Faskari, Musawa, and Matazu. He also recommended the creation of an additional LGA to accommodate the area’s growing population and administrative needs.

Lawal argued that forming the new state would bring governance closer to the people, ensure better resource distribution, boost infrastructure development, and enhance political participation. He added that it would help reduce marginalisation and improve local security coordination.

The proposal also touched on broader constitutional reforms. Lawal called for:

Creation of state police to tackle insecurity more effectively at the grassroots level,

Local government reform to improve autonomy and accountability, and

Formal recognition of traditional rulers in the constitution, given their vital roles in security, agriculture, and community welfare.

The group emphasized that their demand aligns with the national call for restructuring and balanced development and urged lawmakers to give their proposal serious consideration.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
