GROUPS CALL FOR RECALL OF TOBACCO AMENDMENT BILL

Civil society organisations and public health advocacy groups have called on the National Assembly to recall the proposed Tobacco Amendment Bill, expressing concerns over its potential implications for tobacco control and public health.

The groups argued that certain provisions of the bill could weaken existing tobacco control measures and undermine efforts to reduce tobacco consumption and protect public health.

They urged lawmakers to engage health experts, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders before proceeding with any amendments to ensure that Nigeria's tobacco control framework remains aligned with international best practices.

Public health experts stressed the importance of maintaining strong regulations on tobacco advertising, promotion, packaging, and sales, noting that effective tobacco control policies are essential to reducing tobacco-related illnesses and deaths.

The advocacy groups also called for greater transparency in the legislative process and urged policymakers to prioritise public health over commercial interests.They reaffirmed their commitment to working with government institutions and stakeholders to strengthen tobacco control measures and protect Nigerians from the harmful effects of tobacco use.
