Tension has gripped communities in Plateau State following a fierce gun battle between suspected bandits and members of the Miyetti Allah Vigilante group. The clash occurred in Odare Forest, close to Kukawa village in Dengi District of Kanam Local Government Area.

Security expert Zagazola Makama disclosed details of the incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. According to him, the confrontation took place on Monday, July 7, at around 4:30 p.m. when the vigilantes reportedly ventured into the forest for an operation.

“They were suddenly ambushed by armed bandits, leading to a heavy exchange of gunfire,” Makama wrote.

Community sources reported that the clash resulted in casualties on both sides, although the exact number of those killed or injured is yet to be confirmed.

Makama added that a joint security team swiftly responded to a distress call and moved into the area. However, dense forest and challenging terrain have made it difficult for security forces to fully assess the situation or secure the entire location.

Military and other security agencies have since launched a coordinated operation to regain control of the area and determine the true extent of the violence.

Meanwhile, authorities are urging residents in nearby communities to stay vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity to help prevent further attacks.

This incident highlights the growing security concerns in Plateau and other parts of Nigeria where vigilante groups are increasingly taking on roles in combating banditry and protecting local communities.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
